Other conditions are more variable. If you are very red, once or twice a year may be needed. The light bypasses the outer layer of skin epidermis and gently heats the cells in the deeper layer of skin dermis. In the deeper layer of skin there are cells called fibroblasts which produce collagen. When these cells are stimulated by the laser light and heat they produce more collagen which improves texture and fine wrinkles.
No, it does not. You can have the treatments done any time of the year but summer is more difficult if you pick up color easily in the sun. So wear your daily sunscreen and protect your new freshly treated skin with hats and staying out of the sun in peak hours. The more pale your skin and the more you have stayed out of the sun in the weeks prior to IPL treatments, the safer the treatments are.
The main side effects are mild, temporary swelling, redness, an accentuation of the brown spots, crusting, and an occasional bruise or small superficial blister like a sunburn blister. There are other more serious and rare side effects which can occur if sunless tanner or sun exposure occurred just prior to the IPL treatment.
If you have dark skin then the IPL may not be the best choice for treatments as the risk for side effects increases in highly pigmented skin. Allen or schedule a consultation, please contact us soon! What does it feel like to get an IPL Photofacial? When treating brown spots also known as hyperpigmentation or melasma larger areas of brown discoloration you may see an immediate darkening of some skin around the treatment area. This is common and nothing to worry about. The temporary darkening occurs if there is brown pigment in the upper layers of your skin.
The darkened area typically begins to fade in 7 to 14 days. Fading of hyperpigmentation depends on the skin area and the type of spots being treated sun spots, brown spots, dark spots, and age spots.
If the pigment is located deeper in the skin, which is common with melasma, you might not see any initial darkening of excess pigment after your first photofacial. To improve deeper pigment issues and brown spots, a series of treatments spaced apart by about one month each will be needed to produce healthy skin with fewer brown spots and less discoloration.
It may not be possible to erase all spots and discoloration, but significantly lighter skin and improvement in overall skin health is common. Treating melasma is more complex and time consuming because the pigmentation exists in the deeper layers of the skin. Successful treatment depends largely on the skill and experience of the individual performing IPL therapy. This is why you should go to a licensed aesthetician or dermatologist for IPL treatments.
With your first and subsequent IPL treatments, improvement is most noticeable starting about a week after each session. Results can vary from session to session, but the goal is steady progress. We schedule your therapy appointments about a month apart because skin cells turn over every 30 days or so.
This gives your skin time to recover and produce naturally skin-smoothing collagen, which is one of the great advantages of IPL therapy. The reason you should plan for at least five treatments is because each IPL session builds on the progress of the previous session. Over time, this non-invasive cosmetic procedure builds upon each session to produce clearer, more evenly toned skin. These benefits are possible by spreading treatments across a period of months.
This gives your skin time to heal between each therapy sessions and helps your dermatologist assess the progress being made with your therapy. The provider will also let you know what to expect in the following days and will brief you on any warning signs.
Prior to an IPL treatment, you want to make sure you are moisturizing regularly, avoiding sun exposure, and wearing sun protection. You should also hydrate yourself well before and after the procedure. Most side effects occur only within the first 48 hours. Your skin might feel a bit sensitive like you are sunburned.
You will also notice blemishes and dark spots get darker for a few days to a week before they peel off and ultimately appear lighter. You can apply makeup immediately after the procedure and resume your normal routine as long as you protect the treated area from the sun by avoiding any sun exposure or covering the area if you need to be in the sun.
Use sun protection and shielding at all times. The cost of IPL varies greatly from person to person. It is largely dependent on their skin type and tone, the amount of damage to their skin, and the size of the area being treated.
