Why flesh tunnels

Today, he isn't wearing a flesh tunnel, but rather a so-called plug. His fingers stroke the black plug in his ear. It looks a bit like a big button, I think. By now, the hole in Brian's ear is 26 millimeters or 2. It takes at least two years to achieve a hole that size.

Most people don't know that a flesh tunnel takes time and patience. I ask him how flesh tunnels are created. That hole is the same size as that of a normal earring, about 1. However, a hole can only be widened once the healing process is completed.

And that very much depends on the individual's skin type. Another way to create a flesh tunnel is by punching out a three to five millimeter large hole, Brian explains. At the same time, a plug is inserted into the wound. Although this way is much faster than the strenuous stretching process, Brian prefers the latter. The stretching procedure isn't cheap. Piercing an ear costs approximately 25 Euros.

With every expansion, one doesn't only pay the jewelry, but also the stretching process. The Titanen piercing studio charges about five Euros for the expansion and a tunnel of 1. And that's only one ear. Jewelry for both ears would cost about 30 Euros, says Brian. We get up. Brian leads me into the back of the shop, along a brightly lit corridor, into another room. The piercing-room looks a bit like the operating theatre from a movie.

Admittedly, there aren't as many instruments and there are no white-clad doctors rushing around with face masks, but the atmosphere is similar. The white tiles give the room a sterile look, and the light grey leather chair reminds me of the dentist. Along the wall, just above a polished metal bench, are rows and rows of small drawers containing hundreds of piercings in different shapes and sizes.

Every piece of jewelry is wrapped individually. If a package is expired, the piercing has to be sterilized and newly wrapped. The fact that many people don't understand how important the correct jewelry is for wound healing, makes him sad, says Brian. Social media are especially at fault.

It might look great, but this type of jewelry is not advantageous to the healing process, because it cannot be cleaned properly and can cause infections. I want to know whether Brian has ever had problems with prejudices because of his flesh tunnels. My gut feeling tells me that most people feel that the sight of these giant ear lobe holes takes some getting used to.

But Brian shrugs. In Berlin and generally in Europe, he has never had problems. In America, however, it is quite different. For a long time, I couldn't understand why. They were just not used to the sight of my tunnels and other piercings. For those who want an immediate result, there's dermal punching. This works like a hole punch and will create an instant gap.

Mellor advises customers to take the gradual approach. Applying excess pressure can squeeze flesh from the inside of the lobe to the outside, causing what's known as a "blow out", she says. This can leave people with scarring. There is a point of no return but it varies. A stretched piercing can shrink back to its original size but this depends on several factors including the length of time taken to stretch and the elasticity of the skin.

In some cases, if you stretch too fast or by too much, the lobe can split. They are thinking about the future. As tattoo parlours now offer removals or reworking, there is also demand from people who regret their ear stretching. Dr Ken Stewart, a member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, says ear lobes are made of skin and fat but they are sensitive organs - they turn red when people get embarrassed and have an erogenous function.

He says the main danger of ear stretching is deformity. He is used to seeing people with lobes damaged because of bites or big earrings but only in the last few years has he been asked to repair lobes affected by ear stretching - he carried out five operations in the past year.

If there is still tissue, he can put it back together again using what he describes as a "Swiss roll technique". It seems size is all-important when it comes to ear stretching. While some body modifiers like to keep theirs discreet, others want to make a statement. Tunnel plugs is a term used often to describe plugs with holes in them. They are usually simply called "Tunnels" by people who wear them. However if you just start searching around in Google for just "tunnels" you often find that you get a load of search results about tunnels under the ground.

So people with stretched ears often search for "tunnel plugs". They have the best quality in plugs, such a big choice in plugs and the costumer service is superb.

I only buy from them and being a loyal costomer has its perks. You will remember me when you buy your plugs because you wont regret it.
