The United States Senate has always prided itself on its tradition of unlimited debate. But the Sumner-Brooks affair proved that, by the mids, there were very real limits on what could be safely debated in Congress—or anywhere in America. The issue of slavery had become more and more explosive, and the fact that its discussion—even on the floor of the Senate—led to outright violence was a very ominous sign for the country as a whole.
