Leisure and amenities The leafy suburban Sydenham is home to a surprising amount of green, outdoor space when you consider its close proximity to central London. Crime and safety Sydenham is a very family friendly area and whilst crime does exist, rates are lower than average compared to the rest of the Metropolitan Police force area and other parts of Southwark in particular, and around average in comparison to similarly sized areas of the UK.

Road: Sydenham lies very close to the South Circular, offering easy access for weekend escapes into Surrey and Kent, and makes for a simple journey to the ferry port at Dover. Cycle: Waterlink Way is a car free cycle route allowing you to cycle north along the banks of the Pool and Ravensbourne rivers from SE26 all the way to Greenwich.
There are many primary schools in the area, of which Eliot Bank and Haseltine have proved consistently popular, while Sydenham School at secondary level girls specialising in STEM subjects and, just down the road, Forest Hill School for boys are also local favourites.
There is also a LIFE Learn in a Friendly Environment school close by in Forest Hill, specialising in providing education, support and guidance to young people who are at risk of being excluded from mainstream education.

Fact file Danish-French impressionist painter Camille Pissarro produced many paintings of the area and his work The Avenue, Sydenham was bought by the National Gallery in Register here. In a series of 11 mosaics on the outside of the community centre the story of Sydenham unfolds. Missing though, is the story of the socialist campaigner Eleanor Marx, youngest daughter of Karl Marx. Eleanor bought a house in Jews Walk in Sydenham in with money left to her by the socialist philosopher Friedrich Engels.
She lived in Sydenham for three years but committed suicide aged 43 after discovering that her partner of many years, Edward Aveling, had married a young actress. Estate agent Natasha Osunde, from the local branch of Pedder, says the area is popular with families trading up from flats to houses, while new-build homes are attracting upsizers from Forest Hill and downsizers from Dulwich.
Sydenham is eight miles south-east of central London with Forest Hill to the north, Bellingham to the east, Penge to the south and Crystal Palace to the west. One of the attractions of Sydenham is the wide range of homes available. There are large semi-detached and detached Victorian houses in Newlands Park, which runs between Sydenham and Penge East stations.
The most expensive house currently for sale in Sydenham is in Redberry Grove, a tucked-away, almost rural road leading to Albion Millennium Green. Call Wells Park Place off Wells Park Road is a development of 46 flats and townhouses on one of the highest points in south London.
