Each moon has eight phases which change at a different rate. The difference in these phases determines the destination of the moongate. But as the phases of the moons are completely dependent on the time of day in Britannia I shall just explain how to use the time of day to determine the destination of the moongates.
This will require a timepiece of some sort. If the moonphase method were to be used, a spyglass or sextant would be needed. The eight gates follow a two hour pattern of increasing number of steps between source and destination.
